How to Survive the Inconvenience of a Whole Home Remodeling Project
Living through a whole house remodeling project can be a nightmare, especially if you don’t enjoy messes, disorganization and not having control, but there are some helpful tips and tricks that can help you overcome the dreaded home remodeling project blues.
Weather
Try to plan the remodel around a time when the weather will be nice and dry. During your project the contractors will be in and out of the house all day so the last thing you want added to your plate is muddy boot prints throughout the house, especially on those light colored carpets. While we cannot predict the weather with 100% accuracy you are able to get a general idea on when the nice days will occur.
The Clock Is Ticking
How long will your project take? This can vary greatly depending on the project, the contractor, and the area in which your home is located. You could need permits and/or inspections depending on the laws in your area and the project. This is something that should be discussed before the contract is signed with your contractor. You will want to get a general idea on how long a project will take; this also helps to determine when the project should be started.
Special Orders
We just mentioned the time the project will take to be completed, special orders can greatly affect that time period. If you have to order custom cabinets or other such materials you might be looking at a longer finishing time. You might think about ordering the special items before the project begins that way they are there when you need them and you won’t have to wait on them.
Storing Materials
As mentioned above if you were to order your special pieces ahead of time you need to think about storage for them until the project is ready to begin. Where will you store your materials? You will need someplace secure, dry, preferably out of the elements and somewhere they won’t be bothered or in the way. One thing you want to try to avoid is having to store your materials anyplace that will have a fee; this can get expensive depending on how long you are using the area.
Other Accommodations
If you are having a large and in depth remodeling project happen at your current residence you will need to think about other accommodations until you can get back into your dwelling. Staying in a hotel the duration of the remodel might be costly, not to mention most times you won’t be able to cook while there which leads to eating out, another expense. Maybe stay with local relatives or friends? Well, this is an option if your project won’t take months to complete.
Noise Is Inevitable
When planning and implementing a remodeling project you need to realize that quiet is not a word that can be used in the same sentence as remodeling. There will be noise, and probably lots of it depending on the remodeling project. Be prepared for noise, this can be especially difficult if you have children who nap or need the peace and quiet every so often. Plan for outings where you can get some quiet time away from all the noise of the remodel.
