Is Geothermal Heating and Cooling Right for Your Atlanta Home?

If you’ve made the decision to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle in 2013, one of the first places to start with this transition is your home.  While there are a number of possible green home renovations in Atlanta to consider, perhaps one of the more unique solutions is a geothermal heating and cooling system.

One of our major home renovation projects featuring geothermal heating and cooling.

Otherwise known as earth-coupled technology, the concept of geothermal heating and cooling utilizes in-ground pipes and a heat exchanger to accentuate the effects of the temperature gradient, therefore providing a superior and environmentally friendly heating and cooling solution for your home.  While this type of system can be quite an investment on the front end, it can offer a significant cost savings long-term if you plan on staying in your home for the next 20+ years.

There are several reasons why a geothermal heating and cooling system could be a viable option for your Atlanta home:

  • The government is currently offering a 30% tax credit for the cost of a newly installed geothermal system.  There is no cap for this tax credit, which will expire at the end of 2016.
  • A geothermal heating and cooling system will save a household approximately $1,600 during the first year that the system installed since there will be no need to pay for conventional heating and cooling.  Going forward, the average household can expect to save $500 a year from this type of system.
  • The average geothermal heating and cooling system can easily offer 20 years of reliable performance, therefore saving homeowners the unnecessary annual maintenance costs of $500 that would be associated with a conventional HVAC system.

Take a look at one of our award-winning projects in which we incorporated a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Bathrooms Shine Bright with Mosaic Tiles

One of the best investments that you can make to your home is updating your bathroom. But what most homeowners don’t realize is the level of personalization and customization that can really go into making a bathroom suit your needs and desires – a bathroom designed just for you!

A fun and stylish way to update your bathroom is to incorporate mosaic tiles into the design. Besides the visual appeal – brought to

A classic bathroom remodel we worked on with mosaic tile flooring in a basketweave pattern.

life by an endless array of colors – there are some reasons why mosaic tile is beneficial in the bathroom:

  • Mosaic tiles are most commonly made using glass, stone or marble. Because these materials are raw, they are extremely durable, meaning a long-lasting and beautiful feature for your new bathroom. The manufacturing techniques used have been honed for centuries, making mosaic tiles a better option than many others you may have to choose from
  • A new bathroom design requires the incorporation of materials that will allow for an optimal hygiene. Mosaic tiles, once installed and sealed, are non-porous, which means that mold, mildew, bacteria and germs are less likely to become a problem. Still, these surfaces need to be cleaned regularly just like any other surface in the bathroom.
  • Again, the option to customize with mosaic tiles cannot be ignored. Many other types of tiles and materials come in designs that are mass-produced and/or pre-cut. This means that your bathroom will probably end up with the same finished look as many other homeowners. That won’t happen with the personalization of mosaic tiles.

There are plenty of areas in the bathroom that look great with mosaic tiles.

  • In the shower:  Selecting naturally colored mosaic tiles to use in this space can make it feel as if you were showering outdoors.
  • Around the tub:  Create your own spa-like oasis by selecting a soothing tile color and covering the basin of your tub with it.  For a more dramatic look, consider extending the same colored tile up the wall to create one congruent space.
  • On the wall:  To add texture and architectural interest to your bathroom, utilize mosaic tile on the walls.  You can enhance the textured illusion by using a variety of tile colors to create a pattern.  And don’t feel that you need to stick to a traditional grid pattern either.  For a bolder look, use multiple colors and lay the tile to create your own unique pattern.
  • On the floor:  Mosaic tile can be used on the floor to create a traditional bathroom with a vintage flare.  It also provides another opportunity to bring color into the bathroom.

Why Choose Quartz Countertops for Your Atlanta Kitchen Renovation?

Quartz countertops are one of the trendiest kitchen countertop surfaces on the market right now.  They’re gorgeous, ultra-durable, low-maintenance, and environmentally friendly. If a kitchen renovation is on the horizon for you in 2013, consider the following qualities of quartz countertops to help you decide on a countertop material for your home.

One of our many kitchen projects featuring quartz countertops

Quartz is the second most plentiful mineral on the planet. The hexagonal crystals are mixed with an acrylic polymer to create quartz slabs. Depending upon the size of the crystals used, countertops can have a more sporadic “natural” pattern, similar to granite, or it can be finely ground for a more uniform look, like Corian.

Quartz countertops are incredibly durable due to their natural crystal structure and the inherent strength of the binding polymers. In fact, quartz is the most durable of the non-precious gems. Unlike granite, which is porous, requires sealing, and is prone to chipping and cracking, quartz is ultra-durable and will last a lifetime without issue.

With no sealing or special treatments required, quartz countertops are extremely low-maintenance.  This makes them an excellent choice for busy families and professionals on the go.  Because quartz countertops are non-porous, they are easy to clean and will never stain. They are even scorch-resistant.

Most quartz countertop products have a respectable percentage of recycled products included during the manufacturing process. In fact, some quartz countertop lines are even mined and manufactured here in the USA, cutting down on fossil fuel consumption.

Ceramic Subway Tile in the Kitchen

If a kitchen renovation is in your future, you’ve probably already done a lot of research and have come across a lot of different choices when it comes to the various features you’ll be changing. One area that’s definitely worth paying attention to is your kitchen’s backsplash.  13-508-3800

Because the backsplash is a focal point that can really add a pop to your kitchen design. We love the look of subway tile in the kitchen. In fact, we’ve incorporated subway tile in numerous kitchen projects.

But the average consumer may not know about all the specific materials out there that can all bring a beautiful kitchen backsplash to life. So, let’s focus on one: ceramic tile.

Ceramic tile is simply clay that’s been hardened in a piping hot kiln. After the outer portion of the tile is glazed, the manufacturer can then add a specific color or pattern to blend in with your overall kitchen design. And because ceramic tile is easy to cut, installation is fairly easy.

Even though an endless choice of colors and patterns makes ceramic tile a common choice for the kitchen backsplash, it’s important to note that there is no one size to choose from. Many people visualize the size of a standard brick for subway tile, but they can be made larger, smaller or thinner depending on the look you’re going for.

Another way that you can customize the look of your ceramic subway tile is with grout. Gray has been a popular color recently, but you might be surprised that the color of the grout – and there are many to choose from – can greatly shift the finished look of your backsplash.

Finally, if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, you might be relieved to know that ceramic tile is user-friendly.

What does that mean?

Because ceramic tile is finished with a glaze, this prevents it from staining. Any grease build-up can simply be wiped away. If easy clean up is important to you, a ceramic backsplash might be right up your alley!

What Exactly is a Ranch-Style Home?

Here at Renewal Design-Build, many of the projects we manage are ranch renovations. These homes are prevalent throughout the Atlanta area, but what makes a home “ranch”?

The ranch-style home is a style that is completely American. It’s known as ranch due to the casual style that was adopted from real Western ranches. This type of home first became popular in the 1930’s and remained popular for the next several decades. This style has recently become popular again, as evidenced by the number of custom built ranch-style homes popping up around the Atlanta area. There are lots of older ones here too, and they exhibit a lot of character.

Buckhead - Transitional

The ranch-style home is known for several stand-out features.

  • Almost all ranch style homes are single level homes and tend to be built in a practical, simple manner. They’re usually built in a “U” or “L” shape.
  • Most, if not all, ranch-style homes contain glass sliding doors that help connect the inside of the home to the outside. Historically, this is a direct connection to actual ranches, which were much more open to the land outside the home.
  • A big difference between ranch-style homes and other common American homes is that instead of focusing on the porch and front yard area, ranch-style homes focus on the backyard and patio areas.
  • Since ranch-style homes tended to be built outside of the city and in the suburbs, most of them had a garage built in. This was done because anyone living in the suburbs typically worked in the city, and it was assumed that they owned at least one car.
