Renewal Sponsors the Oakhurst Commnity Garden's Earth Day T-shirt Artwork Contest

The Garden celebrated Earth Day 2009 with a celebration featuring t-shirt artwork designed by young local artists. There were many wonderful entries from which a grand prize winner and four runners-up were selected. Renewal sponsored cash awards to the winners and provided the printed t-shirts.

Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project, Jan. 19-21, 2008

Renewal Construction is a proud sponsor of Decatur's Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project, an annual volunteer home repair program that helps low-income seniors remain in their homes safely and comfortably. The project raises funds and brings together hundreds of volunteers to work on house repair projects during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend held January 19-21, 2008. The Renewal Construction team, headed by Project Manager Lisa Manka, worked on the home of a senior couple who have been in their home for 37 years. The repair tasks included siding and gutter repair work, plumbing repairs, a water heating system update, exterior door repairs, improving the overall energy efficiency of the house, replacing rotted flooring, and interior and exterior painting.

Decatur Cemetery Wellhouse Renovation

In September 2006, Renewal Construction volunteered to renovate the historic wellhouse in Decatur Cemetery. Donating all services at no charge, Renewal completed the work in time for the fall Garden Tour, which featured the cemetery.

The wellhouse, built in the 1880s, is located near the Commerce Drive entrance. The structure was last renovated in 1999. Since then, time and weather have taken their toll. Observing its condition, Renewal CEO Peter Michelson chose the wellhouse renovation as the company's service project for 2006. Michelson enlisted the help of Jeremy Rhett, owner of Decatur-based CertaPro Painters, to donate expert pressure washing and painting of the structure. Renewal Construction offered its services to the Friends of Decatur Cemetery Committee of the Decatur Preservation Alliance, which maintains the cemetery in partnership with the City of Decatur.

"It would be a shame to let this landmark deteriorate beyond repair," says Michelson. "It's a restful place where visitors have come for generations to sit and enjoy the natural beauty of Decatur's downtown greenspace. We want to help make sure it's still here for future generations."
